About the material

What to know about Marble countertops

Marble is a metamorphic stone made of recrystallized limestone. Its veining and depth have made it a favorite for centuries, from classic white and grey to cream, brown and black.

It is a softer stone, so it is best where it gets lighter use, like bathrooms, vanities and fireplaces, or in kitchens for owners who enjoy a natural patina.

Softer stone

Marble can scratch and etch with lemon, vinegar or wine.

Patina is part of the charm

Over time marble develops a lived-in look many people love.

Honed hides more

A matte honed finish makes etching much less visible.

Perfect for baths

Vanities and showers are where marble really shines.

Marble prices range from accessible Carrara to rare, premium Calacatta, so we quote every project individually. These are the main factors that move the number:

Variety and grade

Carrara and other common marbles cost less than Calacatta, Statuario and other rare, premium varieties.

Square footage and layout

The total area, the number of pieces and where the seams fall drive how much stone your project needs.

Thickness

Most countertops use 3 cm (about 1 1/4") slabs; 2 cm is common for vanities and wall applications.

Edge profile

A simple eased edge is included in most quotes; mitered, ogee or waterfall edges add fabrication time.

Cutouts

Undermount sinks, cooktops, faucet holes and outlets each require precise cutting and polishing.

Removal and access

Tearing out old tops, stairs or tight spaces can add labor to the installation day.

Care & maintenance

How to care for marble countertops

Marble is softer than granite and sensitive to acids. Wipe up lemon juice, vinegar, wine and tomato sauce quickly, and clean with a pH-neutral stone cleaner or mild soap and water.

Seal marble at installation and reseal it every six to twelve months. A honed (matte) finish makes light etching much less visible than a polished one. Use cutting boards and trivets, and think of small marks as part of the stone’s character.

FAQ

Marble countertops: frequently asked questions

Is marble a good choice for kitchens?

It can be, if you are comfortable with a natural patina. Marble can etch and scratch, so it suits homeowners who value character over a perfect surface.

What is etching?

Etching is a dull mark caused when acids like lemon juice or vinegar react with marble. It is not a stain; a honed finish makes it much less noticeable.

How often should marble be sealed?

We recommend sealing marble every six to twelve months, depending on use. Sealing helps with stains but does not prevent etching.

What is the difference between Carrara and Calacatta?

Carrara has a grey-white background with soft, fine veining. Calacatta is whiter, with bolder and more dramatic veins, and is usually more rare.

Where does marble work best?

Bathroom vanities, shower walls, fireplace surrounds and baking stations are the most popular places for marble.
