Benefits

Why choose granite countertops

Granite is the workhorse of the kitchen. It forms deep in the earth under intense heat and pressure, which is why it shrugs off hot pans, knives and daily spills. It also offers the widest range of colors of any natural stone and some of the best value per square foot.

Heat resistant

Granite was formed at volcanic temperatures, so a hot pan set down for a moment will not hurt it.

Scratch resistant

It is harder than steel knives, so everyday meal prep will not leave marks on the surface.

One of a kind

Speckles, flecks and veins: every slab is different, so your countertop will not look like anyone else's.

Great value

Common granite colors are among the most affordable natural stone countertops you can buy.

Applications

Where granite works best

Kitchen countertops & islands

The classic choice for busy family kitchens, perimeter counters and large islands.

Outdoor kitchens

Sun, rain and heat do not fade or damage granite, making it ideal for outdoor kitchens in the Lowcountry.

Laundry & utility rooms

A tough, easy-to-wipe surface for folding, sorting and everyday chores.

About the material

What to know about Granite countertops

Granite forms deep in the earth from cooled magma, which is why it is one of the hardest and most heat resistant countertop materials. It comes in speckled, flecked and veined patterns, from light whites and greys to golds, greens and blacks.

It is a great fit for busy family kitchens, outdoor kitchens, bar tops and vanities. With a simple yearly seal, a granite countertop lasts for decades.

Takes the heat

Hot pans and outdoor sun are not a problem for granite.

Seal once a year

A quick sealer keeps stains out. It takes a few minutes.

Pricing

What affects the cost of granite countertops

Granite prices vary from slab to slab, so we quote every project individually. These are the main factors that move the number:

Color and rarity

Common colors like Black Pearl or Santa Cecilia cost less than rare blues, exotic patterns or large-format slabs.

Square footage and layout

The total area, the number of pieces and where the seams fall drive how much stone your project needs.

Thickness

Most countertops use 3 cm (about 1 1/4") slabs; 2 cm is common for vanities and wall applications.

Edge profile

A simple eased edge is included in most quotes; mitered, ogee or waterfall edges add fabrication time.

Cutouts

Undermount sinks, cooktops, faucet holes and outlets each require precise cutting and polishing.

Removal and access

Tearing out old tops, stairs or tight spaces can add labor to the installation day.

Care & maintenance

How to care for granite countertops

Granite is easy to live with. Wipe it daily with warm water and a drop of mild dish soap, and dry it with a soft cloth.

Avoid bleach, ammonia and acidic or abrasive cleaners, which can wear down the sealer over time. To check the seal, sprinkle a few drops of water on the surface: if the water darkens the stone after a few minutes, it is time to reseal. Most granite only needs a quick reseal once a year, and it takes about fifteen minutes.

Granite comes in hundreds of colors, and no two slabs are exactly alike. Photos are a great way to narrow the list, but the best decision is always made in front of the real slab. Here is what we recommend paying attention to.

Look at the whole slab, not just a sample

Granite with large movement or veins can look very different from one end of the slab to the other. Seeing the full piece helps you decide where the seams and the most striking areas will fall on your countertop.

Choose the finish

Polished granite is glossy, deepens the color and is the easiest to clean. Leathered granite has a soft, textured feel that hides fingerprints and water spots. Honed granite is matte and understated.

Think about thickness and edges

Most kitchen countertops in Charleston use 3 cm granite, which needs no plywood underlayment. Simple eased edges suit modern kitchens, while bevels and ogee profiles fit more traditional cabinetry.

Plan for the lot

Slabs are cut from blocks in lots. If your kitchen needs two or more slabs, we reserve pieces from the same lot so the color and pattern match across the room.

FAQ

Granite slabs: frequently asked questions

Does granite need to be sealed?

Most granite benefits from a sealer, usually reapplied once a year. Some dense, dark granites barely absorb water. We seal every countertop at installation and show you how to test it.

Can I put hot pans on granite?

Yes. Granite is highly heat resistant. We still recommend trivets for very hot cookware or slow cookers left for hours, to protect the sealer and avoid thermal shock.

How long do granite countertops last?

With basic care, granite countertops last for decades. It is one of the most durable surfaces you can put in a kitchen.

Is granite more affordable than quartz?

Often, yes. Common granite colors are usually less expensive than most quartz, while rare or exotic granites can cost more. We quote the exact slab you choose.

Do you install granite in small projects?

Yes. We install granite on single vanities, bar tops, laundry rooms and outdoor kitchens, not just full kitchens.
